What is carpooling?
Carpooling is a fun way to travel where you share a car journey with at least one other person.
It’s a great idea if you work somewhere that is not easy to get to by public transport, as it helps reduce your travel costs. People either pay you for the use of your car or you pay the driver. Arrangements for contributing towards the costs can be formal, e.g. payment each day or week, or very informal, e.g. shouting your driver lunch once a week. Or if you take turns by driving, no money changes hands.
In these challenging economic times, carpooling is a practical means of saving money. You’re also helping save the environment! Carpooling helps reduce the number of cars on the road, decreases pollution and the need for parking space, and in a global perspective, reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Shared driving carpooling can also reduce driving stress.
Let’s Carpool actively encourages companies and local councils to introduce facilities to promote carpooling. These can include preferential parking, social events for carpoolers in the workplace, and prizes for carpoolers.
